Murder in the Glen: Patricia Curran, 1952
When a 19 year old girl was murdered on her way up the long avenue to her house in November 1952, the small village of Whiteabbey outside Belfast was stunned. She was intelligent, pretty and talented. Her father was a senior judge, both her brothers were barristers and the family was well-known in the community. The case of Patricia Curran has been called one of the "greatest injustices in British legal history." Hyperbole aside the original investigation into the murder of Patricia Curran left a lot to be desired - and there has been a conviction since that a terrible wrong was done to an innocent young aircraftman... But someone murdered Patricia Curran - who was it?

Hello again Mark I'm slightly sceptical about Gardiner being guilty. I'm wondering if Rose did have another lover. Personally, I'd rather a guilty man walk free than an innocent man hang. Another eternal mystery? Thanks for an excellent account. Christine. P.S. Has anyone watched the Julian Fellowes dramatisation of this case in 'A Most Mysterious Murder ' !2005) ?

My late mother in law was a registered mental nurse at Holywell during Hay Gordon' incarceration and often talked about this case, she was convinced that it was Patricia's Brother who had murdered her, but that Hay Gordon was present also. It was a very famous case at the time in Northern Ireland as crime in general was very rare and murder unheard off....Excellent presentation though Mr Maguire, my late mother in law would have been impressed.

Someone in my neighborhood deliberately stepped in front of a train. A clarinet musician, in his 60’s or 70’s residing in a garage apartment and who was familiarly seen in tuxedo and waiting for a bus to his evening performance. He was one afternoon seen crossing the usual eight track road junction at usual pace with a finger pressed into each ear, without his instrument case.

Your accounts of the murders you have researched are incredibly articulate and well analyzed. It is too bad you weren't either a police investigator, a prosecuting attorney, or a defense attorney for the cases, depending on the status of the facts, victims, or murderers.

If he killed her, and all of the other allegations about sexual harassment of young girls were true (and I think that was the case) then I think it's safe to say he was, in all probability, a psychopath. If he was a psychopath, then it's not at all beyond the realms of possibility that he would have taken great pleasure in telling a police officer that he *did* murder the young woman. I'm not an expert, but I'm fascinated with the subject and have read a lot about psychopathy, and other personality disorders. Psychopaths are often said to enjoy letting others (especially those who have, tried and failed, to hold them accountable, in one way or another) that they have been "duped", hence the term "duping delight". It probably wasn't satisfying enough to simply have gotten away with the murder, he needed to let the police know that they were no match for him, and he had outsmarted not only them, but also the jury, judge, the press *and* the public!.

The judicial system was antiquated in those times but I don't think, in certain ways, it has progressed much. Tasmin Glass's involvement in the murder of Steven Donaldson in Kirriemuir is one example. Knowing Steven was being murdered while she lay in bed and no raising of heartbeat shown on smart watch. Sets off alarm bells for me.

Lizzies problems in my opinion had nothing to do with sexual abuse but another e kind of frustration and that is she wanted to live another life but her father controlled the money and he was rather stingy with it. The fact that the old man was doing more for his wife's family than his own daughters was a major upset. She couldn't even purchase a new dress or attend the cotillion unless she got permission from the old man. Frustration can lead to murder and in this situation I believe this was the case. All you have to do is look at the lifestyle she led after she was acquitted

It's funny you mention the love letters. There's another case, an American case you covered involving Rev. Edward Wheeler Hall and Eleanor Mills. Ripped up love letters were found at the crime scene and yet, Mrs. Hall and her accomplices were also found not guilty. I'm pretty convinced that, if one is of a certain class, direct evidence of motive doesn't even matter. Such people are always going to get the benefit of the doubt.

What a strange story. I’ve never heard of someone from that era, committing such a terrible act and getting off with it. Usually it’s cases of innocent people being found guilty and unsafe sentences, often hung. This is the opposite way about. Made even more strange that it was a barrister’s daughter, a part of the upper establishment. I would have thought the effort to convict a lowly working class lad would have been quite easy. And getting released from‘hospital’ so soon too. ✌🏻👍🏼

I was vaguely aware of Louis Blom-Cooper's efforts in this case. At the time I had (unthinkingly) adopted Gordon's innocence as it was so easy to fall into the liberal search for justice of the time. But you make a concrete case with all the known facts. Plus you make it into a clearly well regarded art form. Thank you.
